Rise with Maya Luxe – Introducing Our Sustainable Office Ethos

This month we launched the Rise with Maya Luxe sustainability project with our team. Our immediate goal is to reduce office waste, with a zero single use plastic policy, and set an example for sustainable living, both on vacation and at home. Through cementing a company culture, first within our team, our aim is to create awareness and action amongst our community of guests, suppliers, partners and villa owners.
The team took part in a presentation held at Villa Kin Ich in Playa del Carmen, just a short walk from our office. Every member signed the Rise Pledge, committing to adhere to the Maya Luxe ethos and preserve this special place we call home.
As part of signing the pledge, each team member was given the Blue Kit, which we carefully put together over the past year from local suppliers and organisations who share our beliefs.
“Plastics are choking our sea life and pollution is causing our coral reefs to die at an alarming rate. In the last 6 months we have lost 30% of the corals on the Riviera Maya peninsula. In 6 more months we will lose 60%. In 1 year 90%! ”
We are all aware our planet is suffering from the relentless abuse we as humans put upon it. From the raging bushfires in Australia, to the alarming rate at which our coral reefs are dying. Scientists have studied a 400 year old coral dying in just 40 days... This is unprecedented, unsustainable and pathetic that we’re letting it happen.
The road will have some bumps, but it's up to us collectively to hold ourselves to a level which is necessary, and will one day become the norm. Change always takes time, but with time we can change. Just take plastic straws as an example. In Playa del Carmen almost all restaurants now use organic avocado straws (or similar creations). The same couldn’t be said one year ago.
We have to rely on each other to accomplish this goal. It’s about spreading the word, educating your friends & family (especially the non believers) and trusting in each and every step we take – it all makes a difference.
We already offer number of impact experiences that you can do while visiting the Riviera Maya. Traveling is all about connecting with the land and local people and these tailor made adventures are designed to do just that.
