Cancun Becomes World’s Top Destination With New Flights Opening Ahead of Holiday Season
Written by Alex Ruelase
The holiday season will be an exciting one in the Riviera Maya. As the world continues to grapple with an unusual year for international travel, Cancun is poised to be one of the world’s top destinations for the winter months. Popular routes are beginning to reopen, while major US airlines have announced new flights to the tropical vacation hub.
American Airlines, Jet Blue and Alaska Airlines communicated they will expand their connectivity to Cancun, both by launching new flights and adding attractive options for tourists as they adapt to a reconfiguring leisure travel market.
American Airlines revealed it will be flying direct to Cancun from Kansas City, St. Louis, Indianapolis, Columbus, and Raleigh, all starting December 19. Likewise, Jet Blue is expanding its Mexican Caribbean operations from November 19, including nonstop connections to airports such as Newark, LAX, Raleigh-Durham, Tampa, and Hartford, Conn.
Alaska Airlines will also offer new travel options from the US with once-daily flights to Cancun from Los Angeles (starting December 17), as well as services from San Diego, Portland, and Seattle.
European airlines are also bringing back direct flights to one of the world’s most coveted beach and sun destinations. Lufthansa, Edelweiss Air, Air France, and British Airways are all restarting their services to Cancun from Frankfurt, Zurich, Paris, and London, respectively, from October 1.
The reopening of air travel routes occurs as the Covid-19 pandemic begins to subside in the Riviera Maya. Thanks to the partial lifting of confinement measures, hotels, restaurants, and other businesses are gradually welcoming more tourists. Mexico also remains one of the few countries with no restrictions for international travel, which ensures passengers their itineraries will remain in place with no risks to their bookings.
Nonetheless, strong sanitary precautions are being observed to ensure the safety of both international and domestic visitors. Meanwhile, some travelers could favor less crowded spots in the Riviera Maya and private accommodation to enjoy a perfect getaway in what will surely be one of the most sought-after destinations for the upcoming holiday season.
