What you need to know about the new travel restrictions

January has been hectic. On the 7th, the Canadian government announced it would require – effective immediately – “proof of a negative Covid-19 laboratory test result” for all air travelers to the country. The test must be a PCR test taken no more than 72 hours prior to boarding a flight and presented upon check-in for passengers to be allowed on a plane.

One day later, the UK followed suit by requiring all international arrivals to England, including UK nationals, to present a negative Covid-19 test taken within the same timeframe. However, they are allowing both PCR or antigen tests.

On January 12th, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced a similar policy. Starting on January 26th, all passengers to the U.S. must present a negative PCR or antigen test to board their flights.

We’re getting the swabs ready. Additional to our sanitary protocols, Maya Luxe is now offering guests in-villa Covid-19 testing that’s fast, safe, and will ensure you have no trouble at all going back home.

Now, you can get either a PCR or rapid antigen test administered in your villa by an on-call doctor who will deliver the results in time for your flight. So when you plan your holiday, you can also book a test in the comfort of your vacation residence. You can see our price list here.

On top of that, our exclusive villas now offer guests free rapid antigen tests. So when you book one of these amazing residences, you can have absolute peace of mind and know everything will be taken care of. To see the full list of villas that offer free testing, follow this link.

One important notice. While you can also get a test in a certified clinic or hospital, we strongly advise that you book in-villa testing. Given the volume of travelers and locals attempting to get tested, booking an appointment can be a tough mission, and there are no guarantees you will get one. Plus, waiting times for results may vary widely. However, if you do decide to go for it, our team can help you with the arrangements.

What’s the difference between PCR and antigen?

Good question. PCR and rapid antigen tests use different lab procedures to detect distinct components of a viral infection. Rapid antigen tests pick up a certain kind of protein – called antigens – present on the virus. Meanwhile, PCR detects the genetic material of the virus itself.

While they are both reliable, PCR remains the most exact. It is also more expensive and takes longer to process. Which test you should take depends mainly on the country you are traveling to and whether you have any Covid-related symptoms.

And yes, they are both administered with swabs. PCR requires two swabs, one throat and one nasal, while antigen needs a nasal sample only.

Ok, so testing is all well and good. But will I still get to enjoy my holiday?

We’re not gonna lie. Travel is not what it used to be back in 2019. However, you can still enjoy the best of the Riviera Maya. As long as you observe some simple rules, like avoiding crowds or wearing a mask indoors and in the proximity of others, you can take full advantage of the wide-open spaces and the seclusion of a private villa.

Our team is here to assist you with anything you need so you can make the most of your vacation. Getting a test doesn’t have to be an ordeal. Let us take care of everything. Complying with the new requirements will be as easy as checking you have your passport on you before boarding a flight to your favorite destination.
