Akumal Monkey Sanctuary

This wildlife rescue center gets tourists close to fascinating species. From spider monkeys to Madagascar lemurs, the sanctuary hosts many rescued animals, most of them seized from illegal trafficking by Mexican law enforcement. These creatures are too accustomed to human contact and thus cannot go back into the wild. Nonetheless, here they receive the care and shelter they need. 

The center runs daily tours with guides that will teach you about the primates and other rescued species. You can also choose itineraries that include ATV rides and a visit to a beautiful cenote. The experience is suitable for adults and children alike, while revenue from tickets provides optimal conditions for the animals, supports research projects, and makes environmental education programs possible. Overall, an excellent opportunity to get in contact with nature. 

Yal-kú Lagoon

Just north of Akumal bay, there is a smaller but no less spectacular inlet. Sheltered by the topography, this cove is not quite a lagoon but the mouth of underground rivers that pour crystalline freshwater out to sea. It is also an almost surreal place to swim, snorkel, and relax among unbelievable natural colors. 

Everyone is welcome. Families will find here an ideal spot to safely swim in almost utterly still waters and observe colorful marine wildlife. There are also small palapas, hammocks, and virtually every other comfort you will need for a deliciously lazy day. Remember, visitors should follow simple recommendations –like not using perfumes, makeup, or non-biodegradable sunscreens– to protect an ecosystem that would be a mistake to miss.

La Buena Vida, restaurant and bar

If you feel like having it easy for a minute and trying some delicious food, there is no better place in Akumal than La Buena Vida. Inspired by the traditional Día de Muertos, the restaurant serves excellent seafood and a range of other dishes like burgers, pasta, and delicacies from their grill. 

La Buena Vida is located right by the ocean at the southern end of the lagoon, about 1 km away from Akumal’s center. To get there, you can either walk, bike, or drive along the beautiful beach road. There is always plenty of parking available.

Golf at Bahía Príncipe

You don’t have to go far for a real PGA experience. The Bahía Príncipe Golf Course is a world-class setting for professionals and enthusiasts alike. Designed by Robert Trent Jones II, the course is, actually, two courses. The first is a 9-hole par 27 course that is fast, easy, and perfect for beginners and more seasoned players looking to perfect their short game.

Now the main show is 7,272 yards of golfing paradise. The 18-hole course is a design masterpiece that combines natural lakes, cenotes, and the vibrant green landscape. It is also the chief feature of the first facility in Latin America to offer golfer development programs in partnership with PGA, considered one of the best resorts in the Americas by Golf Digest. In short, a top-notch experience for lovers of world-class golf. 

Mayan Jungle Experience

Cliff jumping, ziplining, cenote snorkeling, and canoeing are all part of a tour that will show you some of the hidden corners of the tropical forest. Located within the Tankah Reserve, just north of Tulum, the circuit set up for visitors is a captivating summary of the jungle. Freshwater canals that wind among the mangroves, sinkholes that become natural pools, and a whole lot of lush tropical vegetation are some of the main attractions. 

Getting acquainted with the jungle is easy. The experience offers private transportation, lunch, snacks, and, of course, specialized guides that will tell you all about the ecosystem. Snorkeling gear is also readily available. All you need is a swimsuit, comfortable sandals, and biodegradable bug repellent for a family-friendly tour that will submerge you into the deep green.
