We are aware that you may have worries about traveling to the Riviera Maya, as you would with any foreign destination. Despite some recent reports about safety in Mexico and controversial travel warnings like those put out by the U.S. government, for example, we’d like to ease your concerns about traveling to our beautiful region, which remains calm and ready to welcome visitors as usual.
The Riviera Maya and the state in which its located remains one of the safest in all of Mexico. Relative to the number of tourist who flock to the region every year -- 11 million, according to the local tourist board -- incidents here are extremely rare. Your biggest worries remain sunburns and headaches from indulging in too much tequila!
Ask anyone who travels to its beautiful beaches, and the fear-mongering that occasionally goes on is undeserved. The Riviera Maya has one of the country’s highest “return” rates, in fact, e.g. visitors tend to love it so much they want to come back again and again. That includes travelers with children, as its calm waters, super friendly locals and many activities make it an attractive destination for families. It's also considered one of the top retirement destinations for North Americans.
Still, you can be sure that the Mexican authorities have the safety of its visitors at the forefront of their minds. Tourism is very big business in regions like the Riviera Maya and, if you’ve ever traveled to the region before, you would have noticed that the Mexican military and local police have always had a strong presence here, and in recent days that hasn't changed. It contributes to making the Riviera Maya safer than some major metropolitan areas of the United States.
Remember that Mexico is a very large country and its trouble regions remain its border states, mainly, and some areas of the interior, many hours by air from the Yucatan Peninsula.
